Towada Travel Guide

The Towada area is located in the southern part of Aomori Prefecture.

Located in the southwestern part of Towada City, Towada-ko Lake is one of the Tohoku region’s most symbolic scenic attractions. Towada-ko Lake was formed about 200,000 years ago by volcanic activity, and the lake came to be as water accumulated in it over time. The region surrounding the lake is part of Towada Hachimantai National Park. At the lake you can enjoy pleasure cruising and trekking among other activities.

Flowing outward from Towada-ko Lake is a 14km long mountain stream called Oirase Stream. We recommend taking a stroll alongside the river on the promenades that are installed. From April to November bike rentals are available so you can enjoy cycling alongside the river as well. Right next to Towada-ko Lake is an onsen, so you can enjoy the natural blessings of this region to your heart’s content.

During the Second World War an army horse supplementary division was established here so this region is also known for its horses. Towada City’s Kanchogai-dori street (Government Offices Street) is actually the remains of the road that ran between the army horse supplementary division’s work headquarters and the director-general of the division; today it is much-beloved by the citizens of Towada City as a site for holding matsuri.

Also, since 2005 all of Kanchogai-dori itself has been set up as a sort of art museum, with numerous efforts to implement art installations. In 2008 the Towada Art Center was opened, an art museum which displays the works of modern artists from all around the world for visitors to enjoy.

The train station nearest Towada is the Tohoku Shinkansen’s Shichinohe-Towada Station, or the Hachinohe Station. From that station you can take a 1-hour bus ride to Kanchogai-dori Street, which also happens to be the home of the Towada Modern Art Museum. From Kanchogai-dori to Oirase Stream it is around a 1 hour drive by car. Then, from Oirase Stream, you can reach Towada-ko Lake by driving an additional 40 minutes.
