Marugame / Kotohira Travel Guide

Marugame Kotohira includes Marugame city and is located in the western portion of Kagawa Prefecture. The northern part of the area faces the Seto Inland Sea, and is known to be warm in temperature with very little rain.

Kotoihra-gu Shrine is a recommended destination.  The main god enshrined here is known for a wide range of divine virtues including good harvest, industry, culture, and peace for the nation.  The 785 steps of the stone stairway from the prayer path to the main hall is also famous.  In addition, shrines associated with Kobodaishi Kukai, such as, Hagiwara-ji Temple, Kan’on-ji Temple, Koshi-ji Temple, and Zentsu-ji Temple are located here and is recommended for people who are interested.  Also, the castle with the highest stone wall in Japan, Marugame Castle is also a recommended tourist attraction.  It is popular in the spring where 1000 cherry blossom trees can be seen.

Udon noodles are a famous specialty of the area.  Udon noodles are made from wheat flour and are eaten with stock or soy sauce based soup.  The udon noodles in this area are called “Sanuki udon” and have strong elasticity.

Although there are tourist destinations that are accessible by train or bus, to experience the area, a car is recommended.  The closest airport is Takamatsu Airport.  There is also a bus running from Takamatsu Airport to the closest train station to Kotohira-gu Shrine, Kotohira Station.
