Shimonoseki Travel Guide

Shimonoseki is an area located in the western part of Yamaguchi prefecture.  It includes the city of Shimonoseki.

The area is the point on Honshu closest to the island of Kyushu.  Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture is connected by Kanmon Bridge and Kanmon Tunnel, which can be crossed in about 20 minutes by car. In the Karato Market and Kamon Warf, you can also eat fresh seafood caught in this region.

In summer we recommend the spectacular view from the Tsunoshima Great Bridge.  Enjoy looking at the clear water of the sea while you drive over the bridge.

Other than that, there are spots where you can enjoy Japanese culture and seasonal scenery, such as Chofu Mouri Residence and Chofu Garden.

It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area.  From major cities, please use the nearest airports, Kita Kyushu Airport, Yamaguchi Ube Airport, and Fukuoka Airport.  Kita Kyushu Airport is about 1 hour and 40 minutes away from Shimonoseki Station by train.  If flying from Tokyo through Kita Kyushu Airport, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
